This is where the world will get its electricity in 2040

The worldwide mix of fuels used to generate electricity is shifting, with a greater reliance on renewable energy sources and natural gas.

In 2012, renewables and natural gas each made up 22 percent of world electricity generation. By 2040, each is expected to make up nearly 30 percent, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports.

Renewables are the fastest-growing source of energy for electricity generation, with annual increases averaging nearly 3 percent from 2012 to 2040. Most of the increase is from non-hydropower renewable sources, with solar the world’s fastest-growing form of renewable energy.
